With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting every part of the world, the practice of physical distancing has become part of the new normal, and this has made many, if not most, essential services, such as education, business, emergency, medical and healthcare, migrate to virtual platforms, thereby making Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) essential as well. But many of those services have often been impossible to access for persons with disabilities and those with specific needs, those people who make up 15% of the world population according to the World Bank and WHO estimates. It is now, therefore, imperative that ICT becomes accessible. This session with accessibility experts involved in the standardization at the International Telecommunication will discuss the importance of global standards for accessibility and that accessibility policies need to be in harmony with standards, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. |
